Skirting the beautiful Bras díOr Lake in Eastern Cape Breton Island, Eskasoni First Nation is home to over 3000 Miíkmaq. Over the last several years, Eskasoni has made great strides in developing a solid infrastructure on which to grow and prosper. The community has its own band operated school system from kindergarten to grade 12. Students no longer need to be bussed to outlying communities for their schooling, but enjoy learning in their own community and in their own culture. They also have their own fire department, health center, Roman Catholic Church, super market, and Eskasoni police are now part of the local RCMP detachment on the Reserve.
There are many small business operating in the community as well as larger enterprises such as Eskasoni Fisheries Ltd. and the Unama'ki Institute of Natural Resources. This community is on the move, so we expect to see much more in the way of economic development in the near future.

The community of Eskasoni is about 50 kilometers from Sydney, the third largest city in Nova Scotia. The drive along route 216 to Eskasoni, after exiting route 4, is very scenic and relaxing as one follows the Bras díOr Lake all the way to Eskasoni. Even in winter the scene can be a breathtaking experience.
Eskasoni is governed by a chief and 10 councillors who are elected for two-year terms.
